- This cateory represents the most northerly ceremonial county of the South West Region of England,
- with Wales on its north western boundary, Monmouthshire from the north bank of the Mouth of the Severn,
- north to West Midlands counties of Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Warwickshire,
- before the South East county of Oxfordshire to the east.
- The most westerly county in the South West is Wiltshire.
- Directly south, the unitary authority of Bath and North East Somerset is separated from the Mouth of the Severn, by Bristol.
- Although parts of the ceremonial county became the county of Avon, this area was granted unitary authority status
- independent of Gloucestershire County Council, called South Gloucestershire (see Government ).
