R.E.M. was founded in 1980 by Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Michael Stipe in Athens, Georgia. The alternative rock band released 15 full-length studio albums before disbanding in 2011. They were a vital part of the rise of independent music and were themselves promoted by the college radio scene.
