English late Baroque composer and organist John Stanley (1712-1786) became an accomplished musician despite a childhood accident that rendered him virtually blind. At age eleven he was made head organist of All Hallows Church, London. He became known to Handel, who came to his later position at Temple Church to hear him. He directed many compositions by others by commiting the music to memory. Many of his compositions were lost following his death.
