Yo-Yo Ma was born October 7, 1955 in Paris, France. He married Jill Hornor in 1978, and they have two children; son Nicholas and daughter Emily. He was a child prodigy who began performing at age 4 ½.

Though most well-known for his classical music performances, he is called "omniverous" because he plays a wide variety of styles; Baroque pieces using period instruments, American bluegrass, traditional Chinese melodies, Argentinian tangos, a collaboration with Bobby McFerrin, minimalist Philip Glass's work, and even children's TV shows Arthur and The Simpsons.
