Marlene Dietrich (1901-1992): German-born film actress. After starring in "The Blue Angel" (Germany: 1929, directed by Josef von Sternberg), she moved to the United States where she made a string of movies cementing her reputation as an icon of mysterious glamour.
Dietrich gained US citizenship in 1939 and entertained troops in Europe during the Second World War. In later years, she had a very successful "second career" as concert artist. Her recording of "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" was a number one hit in the 1960s.
Dietrich spent her last years in seclusion in Paris, where she died in 1992.
