British leading man, and later character actor primarily in American films, a vital presence in a number of great motion pictures, especially those of director John Ford. Typically cast as a two-fisted man of action. Won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1935 for his performance in "The Informer." Born December 11, 1883 in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England and died November 7, 1959 in Newport Beach, California, USA.
