It is commonly abbreviated to Bucks, and is not to be confused with Buckingham, the principle town, although in terms of population, the traditional market town of Aylesbury and the new city of Milton Keynes are larger.

Milton Keynes now gives its name to the Unitary Authority, independent of Buckinghamshire County Council.

The county stretches from the North West outskirts of London, served by the Metropolitan line, with tube stations terminating at Chesham in the rural hills of the Chilterns, spreading westward to Oxfordshire and northwards to Bedfordshire and Northamptonsire

It is included in the EU region of South East of England.
