It has been 2 days since i moved this site, yet the global search seems to have not picked up the change:
I have no clue how much traffic the Open Directory is getting at the moment, but from the rate of new entries being submitted to the categories I'm editing I get a feeling that we are still far from being popular.
"I received a question last night, and did not know the answer. Maybe somebody else knows the answer.... How often does AOL update their database to feed off of ODP? This person had added their site to ODP and was listed three weeks ago, but still does not see herself listed in AOL. "
The secret is finally revealed...
Could anyone tell me how long it takes before Google web directory gets the refreshed listing?
OK, I know it takes some time to update the database, but it's been two weeks already and when I search for my topic I get the same contents in the page as two weeks ago. Dmoz. Org is however OK, it's the search engine the one that is not ok. Any comments about what to do, besides waiting for someone to update?
How long does it take before other sites such as AOL, updates to show show the same sites that are in Dmoz?
Three questions: 1. If I delete a site, will AOL also delete it? 2. How does AOL rank the sites (%'s). I noticed that they are not alphabetical like on dmoz. 3. Does AOL update very often?
I started editing Regional: US: Government: Employment on 12/4/99. When I started there were only 4 sites in the category and since I've added and/or reviewed and edited 16 additional for a total of 20 sites. Yet, the aol search for "government jobs" only shows the original 4 sits in the search under the noted category. How long does it take AOL to update their data with our new additions?.
The now famous "I'm a Monkey, I'm a Tree" thread.
ODP grows with substantial leaps and bounds every week. Showcasing what was done even one month ago isn't quite a fair representation of the current directory structure. That and its hard to keep the directory current and fresh when its only updated once a month.......
I tried the faq's, and I hope this isn't a stupid newbie question, but what is the relationship between directory.netscape and dmoz.org? I thought they were interlinked. For example, I joined as editor of..........
I too just hopped on board (9/22). Can anyone give me an idea what the update cycles are for SE's using ODP data, specifically aolsearch, search.aol, and HotBot (and others if you have the info)? CAT:Arts/Crafts/Wood_Crafts/Woodworking
(Ive edited and moved this post to the other tread that I just descovered~~~~Sorry)
This question has been asked a few times will little value in answers. I've been watching Lycos, Hotbot, Dogpile and Netscape for when they update the sections I own. Last week, L, H and D updated their ODP listings... sortof. I'm still waiting for Netscape. I say sort of because of what was listed. The best I could figure is that all changes prior to the end of last month were copied on media and sent to L, H, and D. About two weeks later, the changes are installed made available. I only have this one sample as a test so I can't say if this is the procedure for real. I'll have to wait and see if Netscape changes to see if they work the same way.
One of the great strengths of ODP seems to me the fact that it 'feeds' so many other directories (ie Hotbot, Altavista, Go2net, Netscape, Lycos), but I was wondering how often this actually happens?
How long does it take for my edits to appear on search engines?
I know this is a little off-subject, because this is a forum for "editing issues," but I have noticed that directory at http://directory.netscape.com is older than the one at mozilla.
I just saw the "Netscape" version of ODP for the first time. Ctagories I added earlier today showed up immediately on the dmoz/OPD but are not on the Netscape/ODP several hours later. How much delay is there in the two version synching?
That's pretty good compared to the three month gap that it had. Hope it keeps getting updated frequently.
Why won't netscape update the mirror they have of the ODP? The last update seems to be between Dec 12 and 19th, which makes it irrelevant in the fast moving world of the internet. Seems to me they are not really interested in using what we are doing now that they are all buddy buddy with AOL, etc. UPDATE YOUR MIRROR NETSCAPE!
My main goal has been to find out how frequently Hotbot, AltaVista, and Lycos are updating, because it seems to have been FAR longer than usual. "This thread may actually have some useful information."
This version isn't "live" like directory.mozilla.org is, so edits made here won't immediately appear on directory.netscape.com. We're going to be pushing ODP data to directory.netscape.com periodically, probably every 1-2 weeks.
I am VERY new here and have read about how the various engins update. I have noticed that in the last month or so AOL has dropped a few of the ODP directories from their list. Example: Top: Adult: Image Galleries: Fetishes: Bestiality, now when you go to fetishes, it does not list the bestiality sites anymore. I know this is a rather odd category, but I think you get the drift of my question. Why did they drop them? And when are they going to add them again? Thanks and HELLO ODP WORLD!
Does anyone know how long it takes the various search engines to show the URLs recetnly added? Also, how are they indexed? For example, I a certain local's "lodging" searchon Hot Bot, and many local pages did not show up, however, palces from halfway across the country did.
Does anybody know how AOL ranks the "Web Sites" (not "Web Pages" which comes from Inktomi) when you do a search?
I have edited a couple of sites in my cat over 3 weeks ago and they are still not in the public domain. Would someone please point me in the right direction as to how to edit correctly?
I notice that Netscape's version of the category for which I just signed up as an editor is over 5 months old (their updated date at the bottom) How often do Netscape and Hotbot update thier versions of the Open Directory? Just curious.
I know lycos and other services use the dmoz data, but about how often do they actually update their own listings to refect the current state of dmoz data? Many seem to have quite old data compared to the current state of dmoz's edits.
I just signed as an editor a few days ago, of course nothing I have added has been updated, although I read that there are nightly updates. Can anyone with more experience give me a more realistic expectation? Thanks
Hi I was wondering how often the major search engines like Alta Vista and Netscpae etc update the OPD files? Also are all the OPD files published in search engines or do the search engines employ people to do secondary editing?

Now that a number of search engines use ODP I have been going to them to see if my categories have been updated with my latest edits. It appears that they are very lax in updating these edits. How long does it usually take? Altavista and Lycos haven't updated in months.
I've been asked a few times by submitters why thier links haven't been added. Each time ( I never seem to learn) I've told them I've added the links and they should see them and I don't know why they don't. Then everything clicks when they say "But I'm in Netscape/HotBot etc. and can't see it." So now the second round of questions I get askes me when *I* will update the Netscape directory. I've handled that in what I hope is an upbeat manner but I would rather be able to tell the people asking "Send email to so-and-so" or "Site X updates every Y months" Any answers out there?
3 weeks ago i become an editor, and the same day i added a lot of links to the category. But when i look at the same category at http://home.netscape.com/ they are not there... How long does this take?
What is the turnaround time for having your category's new sites being listed in AOL's search engine..............
