Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday also known as the Festival of Lights, observed for eight days and nights. It is not considered a major holiday.
A candle holder for 9 candles, called a menorah, is used. One candle is used to light all the other candles. The first night, one candle is lit, the second night, two candles are lit, and so on.
A story of its origins is the miracle of oil. When the Maccabees (a group of warriors) went to re-dedicate a temple, the oil supply was nearly gone, but by a miracle, it lasted 8 days. Because of the holiday's relation to oil, most foods for this holiday are fried in oil. The most popular are latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts). In recent years, savory fillings have become popular for the doughnuts.
