Muscular dystrophy (MD) is a genetic disorder that weakens the muscles. People with MD can't make the proteins needed for healthy muscles. There are many types of MD.
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is the most common and most serious. It affects the gene that makes the protein for muscle shape and strength in boys. Limb-girdle Muscular Dystrophy (LGMD) affects the muscles in the shoulders and hips in boys and girls. Congenital Muscular Dystrophy (CMD) is the name for all types of MD that affect babies and young children.
There is no cure, but doctors are working to find ways to fix the genes that make proteins for the muscles and create medicines that will work like the missing proteins. Muscle exercises, physical therapy, and breathing aids can help.
