The state of Uttarakhand (also known as Uttaranchal) was created in November 2000 from the northern Himalayan region of Uttar Pradesh state. Its capital is at Dehra Dun, and it is bordered by Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Tibet, and Nepal.
