Hamburg, which is also a Land ("city-state"), lies about 100 km away from the open sea on the River Elbe. With 1.7 million inhabitants, it is the second largest city in the Federal Republic of Germany.
Hamburg is one of the oldest republics of Europe with a 1200 year history. Hamburg owes its economic prosperity to its long tradition as a commercial city and port.
