Centrally located in Västra Götaland County, Alingsås municipality has about 35000 inhabitants. The first known occurrence in a document of the name Alingsås was in 1362. The central town from which the municipality has its name, received town status in 1619.
Apart från Alingsås town, there are a number of smaller towns in the municipality, including Sollebrunn, Ingared and Gräfsnäs.
