The Isle of Portland is a landform projecting from the Dorset coast in to the English Channel, with a lighthouse, Portland Bill,
at its southern tip; further south than Worth Matravers on the Isle of Purbeck and Niton Lighthouse on the Isle of Wight,
though Torquay is further south across Lyme Bay.
The A354 road is the only land access to Portland, via Ferry Bridge, along the tombolo from  Wyke Regis.
To the west of the tombolo, Chesil Beach is a natural shingle bank, protecting the coastline westwards to  Abbotsbury.
Portland Harbour is east of the A354, which since 1849 construction of breakwaters from the north east of the Isle at Baclava Bay,
extending north east, then north west to Ridwell on the south bank of the River Wye at  Wyemouth, encloses 520 hectares,
creating one of the largest man-made harbour in the world.
The south shore of Portland Harbour is highly developed and websites for this area, including Castletown on low ground
to Chiswell, north of the higher Verne Heath, are listed in the  Fortuneswell category.
This category lists websites for the area south of The Verne, which includes numerous Portland Stone quarries,
and sites of special scientific interest (SSSI), as well as the villages of Grove, Easton,
Weston and Southwell before the remote southern tip at Portland Bill.
