York is regarded as being the capital city of Yorkshire. It is situated in the southern part of North Yorkshire, and is near to the city of Leeds. York was founded in AD71 by the Romans, under the name Eboracum, and was (very briefly) the capital of the Roman Empire - one of the Roman Emporers is buried in York. It later became Jorvik under the rule of the Vikings. Its long running history means that there are many historical attributes to the city; the centre of the city is surrounded by a wall built by the Normans in the 11th century and some buildings are over 500 years old. Due to its historical influence, tourism is a major industry in the city, and there are a number of museums and attractions to visit as well as many hotels, guest houses and inns to stay at.
