Trowbridge is the county town of Wiltshire, based on it historical role from Roman times, on the River Biss,
through to the industrial revolution, when the Kennet and Avon Canal was bringing coal from Somerset,
to supply steam-powered manufacturing of clothing and blankets in mills sourced by the county's wool.
For a county town it is relatively close to  Bath, separated from the Somerset boundary only
by  Westwood, Wingfield and  Southwick.
Development has extended into North Bradley, directly south, before Heywood parish
on the A350, represented by  Westbury further south.
At Yarnbrook the A350 turns north to avoid Trowbridge, passing north through West Ashton parish,
before Great Hinton, separated from the east of Trowbridge by  Hilperton.
Staverton is directly north east, where the Kennet and Avon Canal leaves Trowbridge parish
forming the boundary between Hilperton and Staverton, on the way eastwards to  Devizes.
North of Trowbridge, the A363 leads to  Bradford-on-Avon.
