Damascus (commonly known as ash-Shām also known as City of Jasmin) is the capital and largest city of Syria.
It is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world and its current population is estimated at about 1,669,000. The city is a governorate by itself, and the capital of the governorate of Rif Dimashq ("Rural Damascus").
