Fort Smith is located in Sebastian County in Northwest Arkansas. The area is in a valley surrounded by the Ozark and Ouachita mountains chains.
The border town of Fort Smith grew up around a fort established in late 1817 on a bluff overlooking the junction of the Arkansas and Poteau rivers.
