Del Mar is a resort and residential city 20 miles north of downtown San Diego. It is known for the Del Mar Race Track, which was built in the 1930's by Bing Crosby and a group of San Diego and Hollywood investors. The place "where the turf meets the surf" has thoroughbred horseracing every year from mid-July to early September. In Spanish, the name means "Of the Sea.)

According to the 2000 census, the Del Mar ZIP code, 92104, contains 13,938 residents. This includes, however, both Del Mar and some nearby areas outside the city.
