Norwalk [Fairfield County] was settled in 1649 and incorporated in 1651. Its name is believed to be derived from the Algonquin word 'noyank', meaning 'point of land'. Its Native American name is "Naramauke".

Area, 36.3 sq. miles. Population, 2000 Census, 82,951. Voting districts, city elections, 12; state, 14. Principal industries, a wide variety of electronic research and manufacturing companies which produce signaling devices, aircraft radar equipment, optical devices and electronic components; manufacturing of chemicals, machinery and equipment of many kinds, auto accessories, wearing apparel and allied industries, hardware, packaged and frozen foods, lithography and printing.

Norwalk includes the areas known as South Norwalk and Rowayton.
