Tamil belongs to the Dravidian family of languages. About 70 million people speak the language. Over 50 million of them live in the South Indian State of Tamil Nadu. The next largest Tamil population is in Sri Lanka, mostly in the North-eastern Province. Tamils live or work in virtually every country in the world.
