In September 2004, the Montreal Expos were officially moved to Washington, DC. In November, 2004 the Washington club was given the nickname Nationals. The Washington Nationals name was first used by various clubs from the 1850's to the 1880's. In the early 20th century, the nicknames Nationals and Senators were used interchangeably for the same American League club.
