Fortified habitations, usually built and occupied during medieval times.
Castle replicas built as homes in later centuries and not intended for defence are not included in this category, unless the replica is a faithful reconstruction of an historical building on its original site.
Post-medieval houses that are not fortified, but are called x or y Castle or Chteau or Schloss, because there once was a castle on the site, should be submitted to Arts/Architecture/History/Building Types/Houses/
Only châteaux which retain at least some elements of fortifications will be listed here. Other châteaux should be submitted to the country houses category.
