Maltese-American cartoonist who originally studied as a journalist, and has combined the two fields in his work. Sacco (b. 1960) worked in newspaper and magazine publishing for several years as well as editing the comics anthology Centrifugal Bumble-Puppy, until in 1988 he started his own series, Yahoo, which presented first-person journalism on diverse subjects. His series Palestine, starting in 1993, was a portrait of life in the Israeli-occupied territories based on his travels and interviews over a two-month period. The collected edition won an American Book Award. Sacco went on to cover war and its aftermath in the former Yugoslavia, producing the book Safe Area Gorazde as well as related short stories.
American cartoonist who has produced an unusually large body of autobiographical work at a young age. Schrag self-published her first book, Awkward, at the age of fifteen; this and her next two books recounted her experiences in high school and her conflicted sexual identity.

Posy Simmonds - English cartoonist, born Rosemary Elizabeth Simmonds in Berkshire, England, 1945, has done newspaper strips and illustrations for The Guardian since 1972, as well as several graphic novels and children's books.
Art Spiegelman (b. 1948) was born in Sweden to Polish Jewish refugees, grew up in New York, and started working in underground comics in the late 1960s. He was a co-founder of Arcade, an influential 1970s anthology, and during the 1980s he and his wife Françoise Mouly edited Raw, which showcased notable experimental cartoonists from America and Europe. Spiegelman is best known for his graphic novel Maus, which depicted his father's experiences during the Holocaust; he won the Pulitzer Prize for Maus in 1992.
