Fantasy races and creatures are beings with ties to history, religion, legends and mythology as well as imagination and fiction. The lines separating these may not be easily visible. They may also be clearly defined by those who are passionate about them. Where traditional origins are drawn into fantasy and pop culture - past and present - is where this category begins.
Submitted sites should predominantly contain content about a variety of fantasy races and/or creatures. Sites about a particular fantasy being not available in a subcategory may be listed in the Fantasy Races and Creatures category. Although a site may contain diverse aspects of the topic - ranging among multimedia, literature, community, art and artists, mythology, belief, fiction and non-fiction - submitted sites should predominantly focus on fantasy races and/or creatures with specific sites submitted to their applicable subcategory.
Should the site submitted be not applicable to this category, one of the following related categories or their subcategories may be appropriate: Cryptozoology, Otherkin or Folklore.

In existence since pre-Christian writings, popularized bestiaries in the middle ages often contained depictions of animals real and thought to be real with their mystical and symbolic properties. These works were compendiums of beasts, animals, plants and/or minerals. Modern bestiaries are frequently lists of beasts or creatures either fictitious or real, which may range from animals to mythical creatures to aliens. In some usages a modern bestiary may be named a beastiary. Whether from the middle ages or modern times, some are fanciful creations and others are serious works.
Sites submitted to this category may be a bestiary, a site about bestiaries or about a particular bestiary. Sites which do not define themselves as bestiaries - though are comparable in their definition - may also be listed. The content of the site should be predominantly bestiary related. Sites specific to one creature, beast, animal, plant or mineral should be submitted to a more specific category of their type.

Centauroids are beings half humanoid and half beast, typically separated at the torso. They have appeared in film since at least the 1920's and continue to appear in modern movies, books, art and science fiction.

Dragons are not unlike lizards, and range roughly in size from tiny to gigantic. Of the various versions of dragons, they may also be quite humanoid. Some dragons fly, some dragons swim, and some do neither. Though their hides are often considered to be covered in scales, tales and art have depicted them with hair, fur, feathers, or leathery skin. The colours of dragons in fantasy and mythology have been any and every colour and combination.
This category is for sites containing predominantly dragon creature content. Various races, species, or relations of dragons may also be listed such as hydras, drakes, wyverns and international dragons such as the naga, lindworm and nidhogg. Fantasy game and film dragons are also welcome.

Typically, elves are known to have pointy ears and are either as tall as humans or short in stature. They are long-lived or immortal and may vary from strikingly beautiful, immeasurably ugly or invisible. Legends of their origins vary. They are said to live on mountains or by rivers in isolated areas. One legend tells they were angels who would not choose sides between good and evil. As a result they were sent to earth where they became elves. Other stories are of elves making shoes, helping at the north pole and either being helpful or mischievous. Modern fantasy fiction trends lean toward the elvish style created by Tolkien.
Submitted sites should contain predominantly elven content. Such may include - although not limited to - fiction, non-fiction, mythology, legends, stories, poetry, image galleries, fandom, community, movies and television, history, art, sculpture and artists. A mix of different media on the topic of elves are also welcome to this category.

Fairies are considered a supernatural creature which appear similar to a small human with wings, although their size and height may vary. They are often depicted dwelling in fairy realms with other fantasy creatures. Sometimes this region is a distinct universe apart from ours; sometimes it is a layer of reality superimposed over our own. The term fairie may also be applied to other races and creatures such as - although not limited to - brownies, gnomes, nixies, goblins, trolls, elves, dwarves, pixies, kobolds, sylphs, sprites and undines. The concept of the fairie (or fairy or faerie or faery) is one passed down from antiquity. In modern times the fairie tradition continues as new authors and artists expand, combine and explore their realm.
This category houses sites predominantly about fairie fandom and belief as well as artwork, multimedia, literature and personal interests. Fairie sites with mixed media content combining different aspects and topics in relation to fairies are welcome to this category as are more specific site content. There are several types of fae. Should a site be specific to a particular one such as elves or gnomes, such site should be sumbited to their own specific race or creature category if one is available.

Gnomes originated before the creation of the garden gnome statue. This category focuses on the side of the traditional or mythological gnome considered to be possibly of the fae or earth dweller. Gnomes are an old and perhaps almost forgotten race of creatures frequently represented as a humanoid creature or race, short or very small in stature. They are commonly considered as small men being 15cm tall weighing between 275-300grams and often wearing red caps, blue shirts and greenish-brown shorts. Gnomes are considered fictitious by some and real by others. More traditionally they are considered earth dwellers wearing the colours of nature, staying away from human sight. Gnome culture is of men, woman and children caring for the flora and fauna around them with a reputation of being knowledgeable, while others are known for guarding treasure with less than admirable temperaments. In fantasy themes they are all of the above and more.
Sites within this category should be related to the traditional side and origins of gnomes rather than the lawn ornaments in their likeness. A limited amount of content may reference garden gnome lawn ornaments as long as such content does not dominate. Submitted sites should contain predominantly content about gnomes as a race or creature. Mixed content relating to the various aspects of gnomes is welcome such as fantasy, fiction, non-fiction, community, art, sculpture and gnome artists as well as gnomes in television, film and novels. Sites pertaining to individual famous gnomes such as are found in films or books should be submitted to the category of that film or book.
Gnomes in folklore and family traditions may be submitted to Society/Folklore/Literature/Tales/Fabulous_Creatures. Sites relating to the culture of garden gnome statues may be submitted to Recreation/Humor/Gardening. Gnome statue shopping related sites may be submitted to Shopping/Home_and_Garden/Garden_Accessories/Garden_Statues.

Gryphons are frequently depicted with a lion-type body, bird-type head and torso, wings, feathers or fur, and with various types of creature tails. Some are more like a lion, more like a bird, or more like a serpent. Contradictory personas have appeared in fiction and history. They have been good or evil, gentle or vicious, and their talons have either been poisonous or detected poison. Gryphons have been likened or mistaken for other similar creatures such as the phoenix, hippogryph, sphinx, and rukhs or rocs.
This category is suitable for gryphon specific sites of any spelling form of the creature name. Submitted sites should predominantly contain gryphon creature content. This may include (although not limited to) fansites, art, image galleries, sculptures, films, forums, books, resources, or a mix of gryphon content from non-fiction to fiction and fantasy.
Should sites be folklore specific including studies, theses, or social analysis, then please submit these sites to Society/Folklore/Literature/Tales/Fabulous_Creatures category. Gryphon related content may also be found at or submitted to fantasy cyber pet adoptions and shops selling collectibles.

Half humanoid (head and torso) and half fish or dolphin-like (an aquatic tail instead of legs) mermaids are traditionally folklore legends as are mermen and other related merfolk. While mermaid stories continue in fantastic fantasy tales, they further appear in modern science fiction works.

Trolls (also known as trows) are generally considered to be vile, gross creatures known for stealing children or a distaste for noise. Such trolls may hide under bridges, avoid sunlight and generally seek dark places. Commonly trolls are considered larger than humans though they have been seen as many different sizes, shapes and hairiness. They have been known to display changeling properties, appearing to be other animals or human. Some traditional trolls were known as kind-hearted, with some guarding treasure rather than hording. There are stories of humans marrying trolls. As a modern twist some fantasy trolls have taken on a cute, bright and pleasing appearance bringing good tidings.
