Band formed in 1966, with numerous personnel and style changes, including psychedelic, hard, blues, and progressive rock. Their most well-known hit was the 17-minute long "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" in 1968, cut to less than 3 minutes for radio play, which caused large increases in album sales. The original band members were Ron Bushy (drums), Erik Braunn (guitar), Lee Dorman (bass), and Doug Ingle (organ, vocals). They are considered the classic group. Over the band's history, there were 71 main and supporting players. Classic group members' deaths were Braunn in 2003 from cardiac arrest, Dorman of natural causes in 2012, Bushy in 2021 of esophageal cancer, and Ingle, the last classic member, on May 24, 2024. Ingle sang and co-wrote Inna-gadda-da-vida.
