Danish composer Poul Ruders (1949-) studied organ as a youth. He taught himself most of his compositional skills. As a young composer, Ruders often reached into the past, trying to find new ways of expressing older musical ideas. Even though he does this less often as a mature composer, he still works to express something of a lost past with the music of the present. His works run the gamut from instrumental through opera.
