Although he was born in the Ukraine in 1882 and died in Switzerland in 1937, Modern period composer Karol Maciej Szymanowski was nevertheless a thoroughly Polish composer by family and by sentiment. He toured with friends Pawel Kochanski and Artur Rubinstein. Two noted works are the opera King Roger and the ballet Harnasie.
