Russian born Dimitri (or Dmitri) Tiomkin (1899-1979) came to the United States in 1925, embarked upon a career in film music, became an American citizen in 1937, and was one of the most respected and prolific film composers. Among the classic films he scored were Lost Horizon, High Noon, The High and the Mighty, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Giant, The Alamo, and The Guns of Navaronne. Between scores and songs, "Timmy" Tiomkin was nominated for 23 Oscars.
