From its West African and Spanish roots, Afro-Cuban music evolved into five major genres: son, rumba, cancion cubana, danzon and punto guajiro. Afro-Cuban music has been a major influence on numerous styles of music. The rhythms of son and rumba lead to salsa, early jazz was influenced by danzon as was mambo and chachacha, timba also evolved from son.
Sites that are not in English should be submitted to the appropriate category under World.
Afro-Latin musicians, instrumentalists and vocalists, who perform within this genre, which encompasses Afro-Cuban, Afro-Puerto Rican (Afro-Boriqua), Afro-Peruvian, Afro-Brazilian and any other Latin bands or individual musicians who base their music on African-derived styles or instrumentation.
Please be careful to note that there are other categories under Latin that may be more appropriate to submit your URL to: Salsa and Latin-jazz. If the band or individual is primarily folkloric, submit to Afro-Latin. If they play mostly salsa, submit to Salsa. If they have a jazz playlist with a "flavor" of Latin, submit to Latin-jazz. If your url is about, for example "the history of clave in Afro-Cuban music" and not a band or musician site, submit to the Afro-Latin category.
