'The Tonight Show' is a U.S. talk and variety show on NBC. Originating on network television in 1954, there have been a number of versions of the show with four primary hosts. The format has varied with each host's style, but has always consisted mainly of celebrity interviews, humor, and music.
The hosts include:
Steve Allen - 1954 to 1957
Jack Paar - 1957 to 1962
Johnny Carson - 1962 to 1992
Jay Leno - 1992 to current
Ernie Kovacs briefly acted as co-host two nights a week near the end of the Steve Allen years, and there have been numerous 'guest hosts' throughout the show's history. The Jack Paar Tonight Show ran on NBC Television from 1957 to 1962. It was during his hosting that the show moved from mostly comedic skits and situations to more of an interview talk show.

As host of the popular late-night talk show from 1962 to 1992, Johnny Carson performed sketch comedy and interviewed celebrities. The show also featured, during this 30 year time frame, Ed McMahon and bandleaders Skitch Henderson and Doc Severinsen. Before Carson started his monologue, at the beginning of every show, he was introduced nightly by McMahon with "Heeere's Johnny!"

'The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson' was also unoffically known as 'The Johnny Carson Show' and most recently 'The Best of Carson.'
