Health Maintenance Organizations [HMO]

A form of health insurance combining a range of coverages, usually on a group basis. Doctors and other medical professionals offer care through the HMO for a flat monthly rate. With a PPO, care is paid for as it is received.

Preferred Provider Organizations [PPO]

A health care organization composed of physicians, hospitals, and other providers. It provides services at a reduced fee. With a PPO, care is paid for as it is received. An HMO is paid in advance as a scheduled fee.
