This category is for sites related to Extensible Markup Language (XML). XML is a subset of Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML). The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is the universal format for structured documents and data on the Web. Its goal is to enable generic SGML to be served, received, and processed on the Web in the way that is now possible with HTML. XML has been designed for ease of implementation and for interoperability with both SGML and HTML.

Significant applications using or built on top of XML and XSL(T); typically created using DTDs and XML schemas. Applications in this sense meaning that XML and or XSL(T) is used (applied) to carry out the required task. Applications (in the sense of tools) which assist with the development or deployment of XML are listed in the Tools category. Resources such as directories or tutorials on creating DTDs to begin an XML application should be listed in Document_Types category. Each application listed, which has multiple sites is given its own category below this one. Applications which have a single site describing them are listed in the appropriate topical category. The sites listed at this level are applications with only one listing, directory and guide sites which provide coverage for multiple applications.

This category is for technical resources relating to the markup language: specifications, and portals about VXML languages, tutorials.

Document Types

This category is a repository of general links and resources for Document Type Definitions (DTDs).

Do NOT submit sites that link to specific XML DTDs; instead please submit your XML DTD to XML Applications.

If you have a publicly-avaliable DTD with the URL ending in (.dtd), then you can submit that specific URL here.

Encoding

The characters in the XML document can be encoded in different formats. XML uses the Unicode (UTF-8 or UTF-16) character set by default, but other encodings can be used if they are declared in the XML declaration at the beginning of the document.

Submit sites related to character set encoding and XML. Sites not specifically related to XML should be listed under Computers/Software/Globalization/Character_Encoding/

News and Media

Sites which give pointers to and digests of topical articles on XML.

Although many listings currently provide the Amazon.com site for the related book, it is preferred to provide the "author''s website" or online companion for the printed book.

If an online companion/author''s website is not available, provide the publisher''s website for that book.

Style Sheets

Style sheets describe how documents are presented on screens, in print, or perhaps how they are pronounced. By attaching style sheets to structured documents on the Web (e.g. XML), authors and readers can influence the presentation of documents without sacrificing device-independence or adding new XML tags.

Tools

The XML Tools category contains various software solutions that can be used throughout the lifecycle of an XML project. The range covers, browsers, databases, editors, parsers, publishing systems and servers. On the top level you'll find links to other collections of XML tools.

Validation

Sites about the various competing ways to validate XML documents for correctness according to a schema definition, including: DTDs, XML Schema, and rule-based approaches.
