Any tool which assists in the development of Internet projects may be thought of as Internet authoring software. More specifically, this category lists tools which are used directly in the creation of web sites, mobile or remote applications, and other Internet-specific projects. Often these programs will take some aspect of development and make it easier via automation, or by pre-packaging solutions for commonly encountered problems.
This category is for sites which concern Internet authoring software - the products, not the act of authoring itself which is covered elsewhere within the Open Directory Project.

Consider whether your site might be better placed in the Computers: Software: Shareware or Computers: Software: Freeware categories.

Utilities which manipulate graphics belong in subcategories of Computers: Graphics.

Notice to web designers and design firms:

Please DO NOT submit your sites unless they concern a particular piece of web authoring software. Web designers should submit sites which advertise their services to the appropriate subcategory of Computers: Internet: Web Design and Development.

A converter, in the context of Internet authoring software, is any tool which translates one file format or language to another. Many of these will convert to and from HTML and other markup languages, but not all.
Please submit only sites which relate directly to conversion software.

This does not include converters which process one graphic image format into another. These are better placed in Computers: Software: Graphics: Conversion, or one of the other graphics categories within the Open Directory Project.

In addition, sites regarding software which converts between formats not directly related to the Internet (for example, Microsoft Word to Corel WordPerfect) would be better submitted elsewhere. Computers: Data Formats: Conversion: Software is a likely candidate for such submissions.

Sites to do with free HTML editors are best submitted to Computers: Software: Freeware: HTML Editors.

Sites with information on software which takes data in one format or another and produces HTML web pages belong in Computers: Software: Internet: Authoring: Converters

If your site describes an editor that produces web pages for users who do not know HTML, it will likely belong in Computers: Software: Internet: Authoring: HTML: WYSIWYG Editors ("What You See Is What You Get").

This category includes links to software tools for building help files in Microsoft HTMLHelp format.
Please submit only sites concerning HTMLHelp authoring software. If the site contains a general information about HTMLHelp or does not address a particular software tool, please submit the site in Computers: Data Formats: Help: HTMLHelp. If the site concerns HTMLHelp authoring software and other types of authoring software, such as WinHelp or HTML, please submit the site in Computers: Software: Internet: Authoring.

Please submit only those sites which deal specifically with an authoring software tool or product. This is not a general VRML category, and as such tutorials or white papers do not belong here unless they discuss particular tools or programs.

For general VRML software, consider submitting to Computers: Software: Internet: Clients: VRML.
