Linux is a free Unix-type operating system originally created by Linus Torvalds and constantly developed further with the assistance of many developers from around the world. Linux includes true multitasking, virtual memory, shared libraries, demand loading, proper memory management, TCP/IP networking, and other features common with modern operating systems. Developed under the GNU General Public License, the source code for Linux is freely available to everyone. Linux can be downloaded for free off the Internet. There are many applications that provide Linux with the power and stability it enjoys today. The Linux category contains resources related to Linux and the Linux ecosystem.
Please submit sites to proper sub-categories. It will help get your site listed sooner and will save work for the volunteer editors. If you do not see a proper sub-category please suggest one on your application.
These links are for those who wish to advocate the use of Linux vs. some legacy proprietary operating system.
This category is for companies that either sell or make products directly related to the Linux Operating System.
If a company includes support but that is not their primary service please submit it to the Companies category.
This category is for sites collecting Linux related links or "portal" style sites connecting to other Linux sites. Portal style sites containing primarily news links should submit to News and Media.
There is no one Linux. To have, install, and use Linux, one must choose one or more distributions, often called distros, flavors, or flavours. Hundreds exist, and more emerge every month. Each has merits, and often weaknesses, as most exist for specialized uses. It is easy to make new ones, as Linux is open source software. Distributions are listed in this category and many subcategories. On this page, categories are arranged in three groups and levels: 1) Top group: issues spanning multiple unrelated distributions. 2) Middle group: types or classes of distribution. 3) Bottom group: specific distributions, individual instances; there is at least one distribution of this name/type, with its own category.
Please submit retailers of Linux distributions to Vendors.
This category has information related to only embedded Linux, in other words, Linux-based embedded systems information, uses, and closely related material. Embedded systems are not the same as realtime systems. Embedded systems can use normal OSs, and realtime types. Embedded OSs are often used in embedded Internet computing devices, Internet appliances, controllers of many types, PDAs, and more.
To this category, please submit only links germane to embedded Linux. Other Linux links should go in fitting categories.
This is the area for software related to Linux computer hardware including technical support sites, product reviews, and home built/kit hardware and just about anything else you can think of related to the physical world of Linux computers.
This is the area for software related to Linux computer hardware. Please do not submit hardware vendors and hardware for sale here.
Only unmaintained/older documents should go in this category. Up to date documents should be submitted to the parent category.
Information and Software about Networking on the Linux Operating System
Please submit only pages about PPP / SLIP networking for Linux to this category. Information regarding PPP in general can be found in Top: Computers: Internet: Protocols: PPP.
News sites should be submitted to News and Media. Magazines and E-zines should be submitted here.
This category is for personal pages of Linux developers and enthusiasts. Sites which are not primarily about an individual belong elsewhere in the Linux tree depending on the topic they discuss. For example, sites which are mostly links to other Linux sites are located in Linux/Directories.

Software developers should consider submitting their projects' websites to the Linux/Projects category as well as submitting their personal pages here.

Fill in the site author''s name in the Title field.
Everything that relates to running Linux on alternative desktop computers / PDA's belongs in here. Most important member is Linux on PowerPC.
Make sure that what you submit belongs in this alternative platform directory and not in the main Linux directory. The site should be specific for a certain architecture. Also, see if there is a better category under /Linux/Hardware Support/.
This category is only for tools and methods of developing software for Operating Systems based on the Linux kernel.
Please submit only sites directly related to tools and methods of software development on the Linux OS. Do not submit personal blogs here.
This is the Category for Linux Projects. This category is divided into sub-categories that describe types of computer projects. Please only add sites to this category that provide or support projects that can be related directly to the Linux operating system. If your site is for a device driver or hardware support please see: http://dmoz.org/Computers/Software/Operating_Systems/Linux/Hardware_Support/
Find links to sites related in Linux security issues and systems.

For quicker placement in the directory please follow these Submission Tips:

Title: Name of Business or Organization

Description: This describes the website and should note distinguishing features found on the site without the use of hype, personal pronouns, or repetitive terms.

A collection of sites that list Linux software, a UNIX-like operating system.
If your tutorial is project specific, please submit it to the appropriate category for that project. If it is distribution specific, please submit it to the category for that distribution. Please do not submit sites that link to other documents. The Computers: Software: Operating Systems: Linux: Directories category is more appropriate for those types of sites.

Tux

Tux is the Linux mascot, a penguin with media appeal. This category is for web sites featuring the well dressed bird.

Submission Tips:

  1. When writing your site''s title please ensure it is the same as your organization.
  2. When writing your site''s description, please tell what your site offers in a clear and concise statement without hype or promotional language.

Thank-you for your cooperation.

Linux User Groups, often called LUGs, are gatherings of Linux users. Organization can range anywhere from very loose to highly motivated. Think of it as a combination of technical support and social outing, both at once.
Only Linux User Groups should be submitted here. Please submit them to the correct region. Submit all non-English sites to the correct language Linux categories in World.
This category is for weblogs focused on the Linux operating systems.
A weblog probably belongs here if a majority of its posts are about Linux, or if a large minority of its posts are about Linux and a large majority of its posts are about Linux and closely-related subjets. Blogs focused upon one particular distribution of Linux, however, may be better categorized under the topic for that distribution.
