Distributions

There is no one Linux. To have, install, and use Linux, one must choose one or more distributions, often called distros, flavors, or flavours. Hundreds exist, and more emerge every month. Each has merits, and often weaknesses, as most exist for specialized uses. It is easy to make new ones, as Linux is open source software. Distributions are listed in this category and many subcategories. On this page, categories are arranged in three groups and levels: 1) Top group: issues spanning multiple unrelated distributions. 2) Middle group: types or classes of distribution. 3) Bottom group: specific distributions, individual instances; there is at least one distribution of this name/type, with its own category.

Directories

This category is for sites containing alphabetical or classified lists of resources cataloging and sometimes comparing Linux distributions.

Fedora

Fedora Core is a Linux distribution. A cutting-edge free operating systems from Red Hat. It is related to Red Hat Linux.

Please only submit sites that are directly related to Fedora and Fedora only.

Gentoo

Gentoo Linux is a special flavor of Linux that is normally custom-built on every machine and thus can be automatically optimized and customized for just about any application or need. This should provide better performance and configurability. Small setup-files, called ebuilds, contain the information about how to build a package. When the user installs the package, it is transferred to the machine, compiled and installed.

This category lists entries that provide information about the Gentoo/Linux Distribution. Among others this includes official sites, community sites, sites that provide additional ebuilds, reviews, help, tutorials and other information around the distribution.

International

This category is for Linux distributions that are optimised for multiple countries or for people who speak languages other than English.

Sites in languages other than English should be submitted to the proper World sub-category, not here.

Knoppix

A "live CD" Linux distribution (that is, it runs straight from a CD). Based on Debian GNU/Linux. Contains 2 GB of compressed software that runs directly from CD.

Linspire

Linspire distributions, and related information can be found in this subcategory. Previously known as Lindows.

Live CD

Linux distributions made to boot from a CD and run from RAM without changing the computers hard drive.

Mandriva

Mandrake and Mandriva are discontinued. This category will list resources for those still running the OS software. Also forks of the OS.

Red Hat

Red Hat distributions, metas of Red Hat and related flavors can be found in this sub-category.

Tiny

Linux distributions optimized to fit on standard removable media and/or to run in smaller amounts of RAM. Where possible, typical distribution size follows description as last item mentioned.

Standardized distribution created and used by Conectiva S.A, The SCO Group (was Caldera), SuSE Linux AG, Turbolinux, Inc. Site has FAQs, press, white papers, release schedule. Available in several languages.

Unmaintained

Contains sites for or about Linux distributions that are no longer maintained.

This category is for sites for or about Linux distributions that are no longer maintained.

The unmaintained category is not for older copies of active distributions (like older copies of Ubuntu or Fedora). Sites containing older versions of distributions that are still maintained must be placed in the categories for those distributions (or directly under the Linux: Distributions category if there is no category for the given distribution).

User Assembled

Linux versions that are user assembled and source based: built from source code by end users or under greater than usual (higher) control by end users; far more configurable than normal versions.
