Roleplaying with the things that go bump in the night. While other genres can have scary elements - what's a Fantasy game without a tomb to plunder, after all? - these games concentrate on the fear and horror elements, usually in a more or less modern setting. The first horror roleplaying game was Chaosium's Call of Cthulhu, probably the most popular currently are White Wolf's World of Darkness games.

Bureau 13

Designed by Richard Tucholka and originally published by Tri Tac Systems in 1983 as Stalking the Night Fantastic, Bureau 13 portrays the adventures of a secret government agency charged with defending America from supernatural menaces.

Call of Cthulhu

The horror roleplaying game published by Chaosium, and based on the Cthulhu mythos created by author H.P. Lovecraft.

Chill

In Pacesetter's 1984 horror game, the agents of the Societas Argenti Viae Eternitata (SAVE) fight a secret war against vampires, werewolves, and other supernatural creatures. Chill went out of print after its second edition, published by Mayfair Games.

Dark Conspiracy

Originally designed by Lester Smith for Game Designers' Workshop, Dark Conspiracy is a game of science-fictional horror published by Dynasty Presentations, Inc.

Deadlands

Deadlands is a roleplaying game that combines the spaghetti western with horror and camp. In 1863, while the Civil War rages, supernatural forces are unleashed upon an unsuspecting world. The year is now 1877. The Civil War is still being fought, and Gunslingers ply their trade alongside Mad Scientists, Shamans, Hucksters and Blessed while zombies (and worse) stalk the land. Published by Pinnacle Entertainment Group.

Ghostbusters is an out-of-print comedy/horror roleplaying game based on the Ghostbusters film franchise. The Ghosbusters rules were developed by Chaosium Inc. but published by West End Games, and use an early version of West End's D6 system.

In Nomine

Steve Jackon Games' roleplaying game of angels and demons, adapted from the French game In Nomine Satanis/Magna Veritas originally published by Asmodée Editions.

Kult

The extreme horror role-playing game. Everything you see is an illusion, only the mad can see through the veils.

Nephilim

Chaosium's 1994 English version of the contemporary horror game published in 1992 by French gaming company MultiSim. The eponoymous player characters of Nephilim are immortal elemental beings incarnated in human form in a quest to acquire occult knowledge.

Unknown Armies
