The emerging genre of rhythm action games began with Parappa the Rapper, a pattern-repetition rapping game. Parappa's surprise success was capitalized on by a host of music and dance related games, in which gameplay typically requires keeping time with musical rhythm. Thus, a new genre is born.

Britney's Dance Beat is a music/dancing game for the Sony PlayStation 2 and PC released in 2002. It is produced by Metro Graphics and published by THQ.

You take on the role of one of six dancers vying for a position on Britney's dance squad for her upcoming tour. In order to make the cut, you have to successfully outperform other dancers through ten auditions.

Bust a Groove Series

"Bust A Move: Dance & Rhythm Action" and "Bust A Move 2: Dance Tengoku Mix", Japanese rhythm/dancing games created by Metro and published by Enix. The US/Canada version of Bust A Move was titled Bust A Groove, because the name Bust-A-Move was taken by the US/Canada version of Puzzle Bobble (for no discernible reason). Bust A Move was also converted into an arcade coin-op machine.

EyeToy - Groove is a game developed by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. Designed to be played with the EyeToy camera, EyeToy - Groove is a music game where players must dance in time with music by moving their body. Through the EyeToy, the players' image is projected onto the television screen, enabling them to physically interact with the on-screen environment. Gitaroo-ManII is a Music game for the Sony PlayStation 2 released in 2002. It is produced by Koei. An entirely new type of music/rhythm game, where your instrument is your weapon to fight against evil.
