The Might and Magic RPG series (M&M) by 3DO/New World Computing is one of the three big franchises of old school computer fantasy role-playing with Ultima and Wizardry being the other two. Along with the Bard's Tale series, M&M defined the old school computer hack 'n slash RPG over nine releases spanning from 1986 till 2002. The Might and Magic world spawned numerous spin-offs with Heroes of Might and Magic being the most successful. Scenarios one to five of the series are DOS games where six to nine are windows-based. The ninth part wasn't well received by press and gamers alike, so chances are that a tenth part will never be released. Secret of the Inner Sanctum is the first part of the venerable Might and Magic series which itself is one of the three big old franchises of computer roleplaying. Might and Magic I was released in 1986 on Apple II and later converted for the Mac (1987), C64 (1988), PC (1988), NES (1990) and PC Engine (?). The first game of the series was essentially a clone of The Bard's Tale I, but couldn't repeat the huge success of this classic.

Gates to Another World is the second part of the venerable Might and Magic series which itself is one of the three big old franchises of computer roleplaying. Might and Magic II was released in 1988 on PC, C64 and Apple II and later converted for the Mac (1989), Amiga (1990), Sega Genesis (1991) and SNES (1992). The second game of the series featured the same engine and gameplay as the first, but with bigger and better gameworld. There is one additional thing that relates to Might and Magic I: Not too much success.

Isles of Terra is the third part of the venerable Might and Magic series which itself is one of the three big old franchises of computer roleplaying. Might and Magic III was released in 1991 on the PC and later converted for the Amiga (1992), Mac (1993), Sega Genesis (1993), Turbo CD (1993) and SNES (1994). The third game of the series was a big step ahead and paved the way for the big success that the whole series should experience with the next five parts. A new colorful engine, much better gameplay and an epic scope made this one a classic.

Might and Magic 4 and 5 - World of Xeen

World of Xeen is parts four and five combined of the venerable Might and Magic series which itself is one of the three big old franchises of computer roleplaying. If there was Clouds of Xeen and Darkside of Xeen installed on one computer, additional quests, monsters and puzzles became available. World of Xeen was released in 1993 on the PC and later converted for the Mac (1994). Bad people say that World of Xeen was originally intended to be part 4 of the Might and Magic series. As the game would become so huge, New World Computing decided to split it into two parts with the option to merge them.

Might and Magic 6 - The Mandate of Heaven

The Mandate of Heaven is the sixth part of the venerable Might and Magic series which itself is one of the three big old franchises of computer roleplaying. Might and Magic VI was released in 1998 on the PC for Windows 95 and 98. After three parts with the same engine, M&M VI introduced a new one that, although not even up to date upon release, used nearly real 3D and suited the game well. Who could know that this new game engine should be used for three parts of M&M as well. The Mandate of Heaven is by far the best rated game in the series. Featuring a HUGE quest with lots of monsters, dungeons and skills and a new engine enhancing the gameplay, M&M VI became another big success for New World Computing.

For Blood and Honor is the seventh part of the venerable Might and Magic series which itself is one of the three big old franchises of computer roleplaying. Might and Magic VII was released in 1999 on the PC for Windows 95 and 98. For many gamers, M&M VII features the best story of any Might and Magic game. Your party wins a contest and is awarded to rule a small realm in the middle of two factions at war. This story and the usual huge amount of gameplay let players overlook the recycled engine of its predecessor.

Day of the Destroyer is the eighth part of the venerable Might and Magic series which itself is one of the three big old franchises of computer roleplaying. Might and Magic VIII was released in 2000 on the PC for Windows 95 and 98. The main point critics used against M&M VIII was its engine. Being recycled for the second time, the M&M VI engine was severely outdated when Day of the Destroyer was released. But the still good gameplay, which included one of the few real decisions between good and evil in gaming history, saved the day for this game. However, New World Computing was strongly aware of the need to use a new game engine for the next part.

Might and Magic 9

Might and Magic IX is the last part of the venerable Might and Magic series so far which itself is one of the three big old franchises of computer roleplaying. Might and Magic IX was released in 2002 on the PC for Windows systems. The adventure begins with the player's party aboard a Viking-style long ship on a raiders voyage. The boat encounters some difficulty and runs aground on the Isle of Ashes in the middle of the Verhoffin Sea. The survivors are scattered amongst the wreckage and players must gather their war party, a combination of both player characters and non-player characters, and escape from the island in search of glory and riches... M&M IX put an unworthy end to a good series, as many claimed. Although using the LithTech engine for 3D graphics, the game's visuals weren't up to date. Also, many players whined about gameplay elements cut off and an overall rushed out and unfinished product.
