Heart Disease

Heart disease is a leading killer in the U.S. and worldwide, yet it's largely a preventable killer. Heart health can be measureably increased by diet, exercise, and tobacco control (avoiding smoking and secondhand smoke).

Congenital

Existing at birth. The word "defect" is more accurate then "disease". There is NO known cause for CHD. It is the #1 defect that a child can be born with and occurs in about 1% of live births.

Coronary Artery Disease

A condition in which the coronary arteries-those that feed the heart muscle itself-are narrowed. As a result, the blood supply to the heart muscle is decreased. The narrowing is almost invariably due to the buildup of fatty plaques on the inner walls of the arteries.

Cor Pulmonale

Enlargement of the heart's right ventricle due to disease of the lungs (e.g. chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema) or pulmonary vascular system. Symptoms include chronic cough, shortness of breath on exertion, fatigue, and other signs of oxygen lack to the body tissues.

Endocarditis

An infection of the heart's inner lining (endocardium) or the heart valves.

Heart Attack

Myocardial Infarction: Death of an area of heart muscle due to interruption of its blood supply.

Heart Failure

Heart failure is the inability of the heart to pump enough blood to maintain normal body requirements. This may be caused by congenital defect or by another condition that damages or overloads the heart muscle.
