Hypnosis and imagery are tools and methods used to prepare for childbirth. It is generally felt that stress, fear and tension contribute significantly to the pain during childbirth. The mother learns how to go into hypnosis so that she can more effectively cope with labor. This allows her to be responsive during labor, with less pain. Hypnosis and imagery advocates claim benefits such as shorter labors, less need for intervention, reduced risk of perineal tears, episiotomy and C-section, largely due to the mother's deep relaxation and during labor and birth. These methods are similar to birth education programs (such as Lamaze or Bradley) and provide the woman with more specific techniques of controlling pain, doubt and fear while she labors, pushes, and communicates with her baby, birth partner, midwife or physician.
Sites listed here will focus on the use of hypnosis and imagery in childbirth education.
