Camps

In its purest form, camp is a sustained experience which provides a creative, educational opportunity in group living in the outdoors. It utilizes trained leadership and the resources of the natural surroundings to contribute to each camper's mental, physical, social, and spiritual growth. While often referred to as summer camp, this experience exists in a number of different programs that are offered by camps on a year-round basis. These include programs that serve youth, adults, and seniors in day and resident camps and conference centers. These programs may be sponsored by agencies, religious organizations, or independent operators.

Academic

Camp where the emphasis is on learning, although recreational activities are usually included as well. These may include pre-college enrichment camps for teens as well as day or resident camps for younger children. Regular summer school classes are not considered camps.

Camps whose focus is on space should be submitted to Recreation/Camps/Space.

Advisory Services

Individuals, organizations, or companies that provide resources and advice on choosing a camp. These may include on-line or in-person consultations, matching services, camp fairs, and written resources.

Alumni

Sites for (and often created by) former staff or campers of a particular camp. This category also includes services for campers trying to get in touch with other alumni.

Associations

Professional organizations dedicated to one or more aspects of camping.

Commercial Services

Companies that offer goods or services to the camping industry. Examples include registration software, program equipment, ropes course design, and camp store inventory.

Computer

Resident or day camps offering programs focusing on one or more aspects of computers such as web page and video game design, programming languages, digital arts, and robotics.

Day

Day camps encompass the definition of camp as given in the category description under Recreation/Camps. The difference is that instead of staying overnight at the camp, campers go for an established period of time and return each day to their homes.

Equestrian

Equestrian camps are those whose program focuses on riding instruction and horse care. These may include camps for beginner through advanced riders, offering English or Western riding.

Please submit only sites for camps whose focus is on horse riding, instruction, and education. If horseback riding is offered only as a part of the camp program and not as the main emphasis, the site should be submitted under the proper regional Camps subcategory.

Europe

Performing Arts

Camps focusing on any of the performing arts, including instrumental and vocal music, dance, stand-up comedy, and acting for stage or screen.

Religious

Religious camps are those owned and/or operated by a religious institution. These include camps and retreat centers which offer spiritual instruction and/or whose programs are based on spiritual beliefs or religious doctrine.

Please submit only sites for camps that have spirituality or religious beliefs as a focus of the camp program. If a camp is owned or operated by a religious institution but does not feature spirituality as a focus, the site should be submitted under the proper regional Camps subcategory.

Space

Camps whose focus in on astronomy, rocketry, and space flight.

Special Needs

Camps for people of all ages with mental, physical, and developmental disabilities and/or chronic or terminal illnesses.

These include day, respite, and residential (overnight) programs. Many camps also provide programs for family members of those living with an illness or disability. Some camps offer year-round activities; some have only summer and/or holiday programs.

Sites submitted to this category should provide information about camp programs for individuals with special needs.

Programs for people with a specific disability or illness (cancer, diabetes, etc.) should be submitted to the appropriate subcategory.

Sports

Camps whose focus is on playing and developing skills in one or more sports. Some camps offer coaching for individuals while others are designed for teams.

Travel and Adventure

Can include programs in which campers spend most nights at a base camp, taking day trips to participate in activities such as rock climbing, canoeing, whitewater rafting, and hiking. Travel camps may include those in which campers travel under their own power or by transportation that permits individual guidance of the vehicle or animal, as in bicycling, canoeing, horseback riding, or sailing.

Weight Loss

Camps whose main focus in helping campers lose weight through exercise, nutrition, education, and lifestyle changes.
