These links will take you to English-language information on universities located in Finland - the Finnish educational system doesn't have an equivalent to "college". For Finnish citizens, study is free of charge; most of the schools offer interesting options for foreign students, as well.
Only sites with content in the English language will be accepted, this includes bilingual sites.

If your site is entirely in French please submit it instead to World: Français: Formation: Enseignement supérieur: Universités: France.

Colleges and Universities in Germany

Higher education institutions in Germany are mostly of the following types:

  • Universities (in German: sg. Universität, pl. Universitäten), offering degree courses of nominally four years' duration in most cases (actual duration of study varies). Universities also offer study for a doctorate after the first degree. Eligibility is by school graduation with Abitur, after 13 or 12 years of school according to state. Some universities are technical universities (abbreviated TU or in the case of Aachen TH)

  • Technical/business colleges (in German: sg. Fachhochschule, pl. Fachhochschulen, abbrev. FH). They have usually adopted "University of Applied Sciences" as their English-language designation but are not called universities in German. Their degree courses are usually of three years' nominal duration. In most cases they are not authorized to confer doctorates. Qualification for FH study is by achieving Fachhochschulreife at school, which takes about a year less than Abitur.
On nomenclature of the Fachhochschulen this category follows a resolution of the HRK (Hochschulrektorenkonferenz) in using the German name of the institution with the addition of "University of Applied Sciences"

There are also other types of universities and colleges, such as musical or theatrical colleges, civil service colleges, armed services universities, and, in the state of Baden-Württemberg, Berufsakademien. When they are not called Universität or Fachhochschule they usually have ...hochschule as part of their name.

Must colleges and universities are supported by the federal state (Land) where they are situated but there are also private institutions of higher education.

The universities and colleges are to be found in the category of the German state where they are situated. If you do not know what state an institution is in please refer to the letter categories where they are cross-referenced by locality, English-language name and also German name (except where the German name ist just "Universität X" for an English name of "University of X").

If you can read German you find more comprehensive information in the German-language category World/Deutsch/Wissen/Bildung/Hochschulen/Europa/Deutschland.

Each college and university resides in its own subcategory. Further subcategorisation may be done using the following template.

Colleges and Universities Official Template

Unless an official site is the only site in the main category for a school or in one of the subcats, it can be cooled.

Admissions - Includes information about and for prospective students. This category would also house all of the deep links about the university from informative sites such as www.review.com and US News and World Report.

Administration - Covers offices and support areas for colleges and universities, as well as general administrative offices.

Alumni - Includes resources specifically directed at alumni. A further category named "Regional" may be established for sites that cater to alumni in specific regions.

Athletics - The official university athletic site should be listed. @ links to school-sponsored athletics and sport teams which reside in Sports/College_and_University/ should be placed in the category. Unofficial sports clubs (i.e., teams that are NOT officially sanctioned by the athletic department) DO NOT belong in this cat. They should be moved to Student Organizations.

Departments and Programs - Subcats need to be created for all individual schools and colleges. The listings for each department should be found under the college or school it is affiliated with. If any college or school has pages for individual programs please create an individual Programs subcat (if this is confusing please see Reference/Education/Colleges_and_Universities/North_America/United_States/ New_Jersey/Princeton_University/Departments/ for an example). If a school has no such academic subdivisions, then all departmental listings should go directly under Departments and Programs, a separate Programs cat does need to be created though.

Libraries and Museums - Covers all campus libraries and museums from individual academic libraries and museums to main branches.

Organizations - Includes campus organizations and clubs - both student and otherwise. A Greek Life subcat should also be created (if necessary). All fraternities and sororities (if they exist) should be included in this category. Since many large institutions have more than 100 club sites it will be necessary to categorize them further. This can be accomplished in one of two ways:

  1. Subdivide by the type of club (i.e Sports Clubs, A-Capella, Ethnic, etc.) This method is preferred.
  2. Create an alphabar, and categorize the sites by the letter of their first name.

Publications and Media - Includes campus publications as well as news and/or media about the institution.

Research - Includes specific research efforts and/or studies. All Centers and Institutes should be placed in this cat.
