By definition, colleges are institutions of higher learning that grant the bachelor's degree in liberal arts or science or both. Universities are institutions for higher learning with teaching and research facilities constituting a graduate school and professional schools that award master's degrees and doctorates and an undergraduate division that awards bachelor's degrees.

The Minnesota Adlerian Society was founded in 1967 through the inspiration of Dr. Rudolph Dreikurs. The Society began in the Twin Cities as a small movement to present Adlerian concepts to the community. Within two years the Society experienced broad public exposure and enthusiastic volunteerism. The Institute, initially as part of the Society, was started by a group of professionals dedicated to teaching the practice of Adler's Individual Psychology.

Even though it is a new college, it can claim many years experience in preparing men and women for the Christian ministry. Formed from an amalgamation of Dr. Martin Luther College (founded in 1884) and Northwestern College (founded in 1865), Martin Luther College opened its doors to the next generation of church workers in 1995.
