A medical definition of the problem: dyslexia is a neurologically-based, often familial, disorder which interferes with the acquisition and processing of language. Simply put, it means there is a physical dysfunction which causes a mental blockage of the thought signals to process information-this is why letter/word recognition for reading and writing makes the comprehension difficult. Often mis-analysed as laziness or inattentiveness of the young child because the individual shows no outward signs. This makes it difficult to detect, as dyslexics tend to be intelligent and try to find ways themselves to compensate for their lack of ability to read at the same levels as their peers. It is also considered more common in boys than girls. BUT- this handicap can be over come with patient support and coaching.
