Vormsi was mostly inhabited by Estonian Swedes (or coastal Swedes) until the end of the second world war, when they fled to Sweden ahead of the Soviet occupation. The pre-war population was around 3,000 inhabitants but currently only around 250 people permanently reside on the island municipality.
