Dalarna County

Dalarna County was known as Kopparberg County until 1997. Its borders are identical to the borders of the province of Dalarna (Dalecarlia.) It is located in middle Sweden, bordering to Norway in the west. The county's area is 28194 km² and its population is 276600 (2004.)

Gotland County

Gotland is the largest island in the Baltic Sea. It has the smallest population of Sweden's counties, 57500. Unlike all other Swedish counties, Gotland is not divided into smaller administrative areas (municipalities). Fårö Island and a few other smaller islands also belong to the county. The main city, Visby, was founded in approximately 1000 AD, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Norrbotten County

Norrbotten is the largest of Sweden's counties. It covers the northernmost part of Sweden, including the province of Norrbotten and the northern part of Lapland. It is sparsely populated, with only 258000 people (2004) in 98211². A large part of the county is located north of the Arctic Circle, and hence enjoys perpetual sunlight in summer time.

Västra Götaland County

In 1999, the three south-western counties Älvsborg, Skaraborg and Göteborg and Bohus were merged to form Västra Götaland County.
