Jämtland, or Jemtia, is located in the north of Sweden, just south of Lapland.The province of Jämtland is not identical to Jämtland County, which is larger and also comprises the province of Hälsingland.

Lapland is the largest of Sweden's historical provinces. It is also known as Laponia. The Swedish province should not be confused with Sápmi, the area traditionally inhabited by the Sámi people, which is also known as Lapland but is considerably larger and comprises parts of several countries.

Närke is a land-locked province which makes up the southern part of Örebro County. The old name Nerike and its Latinized form Nericia are sometimes used to refer to the province.
Öland Island is situated off the east coast of Sweden, south of Gotland Island. It contains some unique landscape features such as the Stora Alvaret, a 40-km steppe with thin soil and a distinctive flora.

Uppland, or Uplandia, is located north of Stockholm. About half of Stockholm County is included in the province of Uppland, but the major part of the province is Uppsala County. The province was formed in 1296.

Västergötland, or Westrogothia, is one of the historical provinces of Sweden. It is located in the south-west of the country, and is part of Västra Götaland County.
