Besides the unitary authority of  South Gloucestershire, the county is further divided east of the Severn
into  Stroud District to south of the district containing the  City of Gloucester,
then skirting the south of the city eastwards.
The north of the city is enveloped by  Tewksbury Borough, which stretches north to the boundary with Worcestershire.
This borough is separated from Wales by  Forest of Dean District.
The largest conurbation is  Cheltenham, separated by Tewksbury Borough, less than 3 miles north east of Gloucester District.
Cheltenham District also has Tewksbury Borough to the north, and although includes the Cotswold Hills,
only the north east and eastern extremes of the county are within  Cotswold District.
