Birkenhead is the major conurbation on the  Wirral Penisula, across the mouth of the Mersey from the city of  Liverpool.
There is a ferry terminal, and a railway tunnel, as well as two road tunnels;
the Queensway Tunnel direct from the town centre, and
the Kingsway Tunnel served by the M53, north of the docks.
The area immediately north of the East Float Dock, known as Seacombe is a district of the town of  Wallasey
whereas the area north of West Float Dock, known as Poulton is a district of Birkenhead.
The M53 encircles the town, before serving the penisula south, via  Bebington.
North of the M53, Liscard and the original "village" area represented by the Wallasey category.
North west of the tunnel entrance, Leasowe is represented by the town with which it merges to the south west,
Moreton, north of  Upton including Woodchurch, and  Greasby, all west of the M53.
Heswall is the next locality to the south west.
